About NIT Calicut
The National Institute of Technology (NIT Calicut) is just 20 km from the heart of the city, Calicut. This institute was previously known as a Regional Engineering College when it was founded during a five year plan. Today, it has been rechristened as NIT Calicut and has also been conferred as the deemed University in 2002. The institute is governed by the rules of University Grant Commission (UGC) and board of directors is selected by the government to oversee the functions of the institute.
NIT Calicut is well known for imparting up-to-date training in engineering and technology. There are many inter personal development skills and recreations for the students. From having a sports complex to open air theatres and auditorium, the institute has immense facilities in its huge complex.
As the institute is located at the foothills of the Western Ghats, it offers spectacular view of mountains and forest. Amid the natural habitat, the ambience is quiet and pleasant for the students to reside here, imbibe knowledge, and hone their skills on different technological projects. The unique facilities, apt ambience, and knowledgeable faculty members have made the institute one of the popular study centers in India.
Additionally, the institute has also been unraveling the new technologies that have come up in the market in recent times. From computer learning to Nano technology and biotechnical issues, the scope of engineering and technology has diversified immensely. NIT Calicut now offers courses on B.Tech, MCA, B.Arch, and M.Tech for students who are eligible for the courses.
Apart from core engineering courses taught in the institute, NIT Calicut has also made a foray into Bio-Mechanics, Value Education, Nanotechnology, Computer Science, and Sophisticated Instruments. The spacious institute has good infrastructure to accommodate these programs comfortably in the institute.
Although the entrance examination is tough, care is taken to ensure that students from all parts of the country get a fair chance to show their prowess in the subject. For undergraduate engineers, All India Engineering Entrance Examinations are conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. NIMCET tests are conducted for those who wish to study MCA. For post graduates and research workers, qualification through GATE is essential.
NIT Calicut has a comprehensive central library that hosts important books for both students and the faculty. There are journals, research papers, documents, and internationally published articles to cater to the students. This library is well-connected through LAN system and Internet connection. There is also an excellent digital library to help students to extract study materials and research papers through online medium. There are lecture halls, huge laboratories, and equipment facilities to make learning useful to the students.
Today, NIT Calicut has developed immensely from what it was in its initial years of inception. This growth has primarily been due to the funds allotted by the World Bank under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP). The institute also offers a number of fests to entertain the students – a way to make learning more interesting. Tathva, for instance, is a fest of the techno-management students. Ragam is another festival that highlights cultural activities of the students.
